How to Wear Cream Blush in 6 Different Ways & Why It’s One of My Favourite Makeup Products Ever
I get asked by clients all the time what my favourite cream blush brands are.
That’s a tricky question to answer because there are so many well pigmented textures, formulations and amazing finishes on the market that picking just one brand is nearly impossible. Cream blushers are certainly one of those makeup products that women want to love but can often feel intimidated by when attempting to apply on themselves. What’s interesting is that I teach a lot of personal makeup lessons each month (on average 10 per month) and whenever I take my cream blush palette out of my kit and begin to demonstrate all the amazing things this one product can do, I inevidentiably hear “Wow, I didn’t know this product was so versatile!” Cream blush really is a versatile makeup product that works double sometimes triple duty for you. So why not learn how you can apply this ‘mystery makeup product’ in various ways and start to achieve amazing results for yourself.
Cream blush is what I call “The all purpose makeup product.”
I personally REALLY dislike buying makeup products that I only use once in awhile. You know what I mean right? Those ‘special occasion’ makeup products you buy that just end up cluttering your makeup bag! 🙁 Nothing is more annoying to me than feeling as though I’ve wasted my money. Whether I’m stocking my kit or buying makeup for myself I want to know that I’m purchasing makeup products that will be cost effective. If I can use a makeup product in various ways and get amazing results then it’s a winner! Those are the products that win a special spot within my pro and personal kits for life.
So let’s get to it….here are 6 practical ways to wear cream blush
1. Pop a little cream blush under your foundation for a subtle ‘lit from within’ glow
Not everyone is a fan of blush. I know, shocking right? But it’s a fact that not all my clients love blush. Adding cream blush under your foundation is the best way to give you that lit from within glow that’s subtle yet effective. Also, when applied correctly, the technique of layering makeup products can make a big difference to the appearance of your skin and the longevity of your makeup application. Here’s how you achieve this look in 3 easy steps:
- Apply your cream blush on to the apples of your cheeks prior to foundation.
- Take a big fluffy powder brush and add to it the slightest amount of a finely milled translucent powder; lightly pat the powder on top of your blusher to help ‘set’ the cream product. Important: do not overuse powder at this stage, you are looking for a very light setting.
- Now go ahead and apply your foundation using your fingers, NOT a brush or a sponge. The warmth of your fingers will help to ‘melt’ the foundation into your skin. This technique provides a more skin like finish. Very fresh, modern in feel and providing a lit from within glow.
2. Say no to botex! Cream blush for mature skin wins!
Women who are over 50 no doubt already appreciate the difficulties that come with aging and makeup application. I get asked a lot from my clients if there is anyway for them to look younger by applying certain makeup products. The answer is a resounding YES! For women over 50, simply changing your blush formulation from powder to cream can take 10 years off your face! I kid you not. For more detailed information on mature makeup take a look at this post I wrote awhile back that focuses on mature makeup tips and techniques.
3. Cream blush as an eyeshadow AND a lipstick? Yes and here’s how it works!
If you’re looking for a modern fresh makeup look that takes literally 5 minutes or less to apply then try this technique!
- Apply a small amount of cream blush to the middle of your eye lid. With a fluffy blending brush buff the cream into your lid until you get a soft halo effect.
- Then add the tiniest amount of eyeshadow in a similiar colour onto your lid. This will set your cream all day!
- Now apply the same blush to the apple of your cheeks and blend.
- Finally dab a small amount of the same cream blush onto your lips for a natural tinted lip look.
4. Mix cream blush with a highlighting cream product to create a dewy glowy cheek
There are women who think highlight/strobing should be seen from space. Then there are women like me who just want a dewy soft glow to the cheeks and call it a day! I don’t know about you but I don’t have the desire to look like a disco ball! If you’re like me, then this makeup tip will turn your life upside down! OK, maybe not….but it will make a difference to your cheeks! 🙂 Here’s the tip:
Try mixing cream blush with a cream highlighter. I use the back of my hand to mix the product and warm it up before applying it to my face. Once it’s mixed well apply this killer combination to your cheeks. Remember to blend, blend and blend again to create a beautiful glow to your cheek.

5: Get a beach glow without using tinted products or bronzer powders
I’m pretty fair skinned and I don’t mind being fair but sometimes I want to kick my colour up a notch. I love a bronzed look but I’m at an age where many shimmery bronzing products just don’t look good on my skin. They age me. Which is a big no-no! Give this trick a try yourself.
- Add a pea sized amount of cream blusher in with your foundation. Make sure the blush colour is about 1 – 2 shades darker than your natural skin. The depth of colour you choose for your blush will depend on how fair or dark your natural skin is and how ‘beach glowy’ you want to look.
- Mix this gorgeous concoction onto the back of your hand and then apply to your face using your fingers.
Vicki’s top tips for best results:
- stick with matte cream blushes as they work best with this technique
- don’t forget to blend well down your neck and around your earlobes. Just remember, blending is key here. You don’t want to look like Mr. Trump when you’re done! 😉
6. Use cream blush as a contour shade to sculpt your cheekbones
Contouring is all the rage now but there is a right way to contour and a wrong way to contour. The purpose of contouring is to create an illusion, not to reconstruct your entire face shape. When I’m working with clients I prefer to contour using cream products whenever I can. I find it gives a much more natural contoured look which my clients and I prefer. Here how you do it!
- Apply a matte cream blush in a beige/brown undertone just as you would with any cream contour product
- Make sure the blush is about 2 shades darker than your natural skin colour.
- Blend the edges of your contour upwards and outwards.
- Finish by applying a lighter cream blush to the apples of your cheeks combined with a highlighting product. Set with a light finishing powder.
