The Ordinary Skin Care – My Top Picks

If you haven’t yet heard of The Ordinary Skin Care line from Deciem then you’re in for a treat!

I think because I’m in the beauty industry I’m always a little cautious about certain skin care lines.  In particular any products that receive a lot of hype online or by influencers.  The Ordinary Skin Care line is one of those hyped up brands that everyone has been talking about online.

So when I was told by a another fellow makeup artist and good friend of mine that I MUST try some of The Ordinary Skin Care products I took the advice on board and did a little digging of my own.

Here’s the thing.  I simply can’t understand why some (most) skin care brands are ridiculously over-priced

I mean, $200.00 for an ounce of moisturizer?  Seriously?  For that kind of money I’d expect to put the stuff on and look like Angelina Jolie after one application!

Certain skin care brands market their products so well they can almost make me believe it’s worth spending the equivalent of a monthly mortgage payment on them.  Almost!  But not quite.

I love skin care products but I do put limits on what I’m willing to spend on my face.

Between my personal makeup and skin care products, I could probably open up my own spa in my little bathroom!

So, I did my digging and a lot of research into the Deciem company.  (aka: The Abnormal Beauty Company) With all the hype and excitement around the brands from this company I was a bit overwhelmed at first and definitely skeptical.

Deciem has a range of products under various brands.  It’s all done very cleverly.  The least expensive and probably the one brand that gets the most hype online is “The Ordinary Skin Care”.

I placed my first order using a website here in Canada called www.well.ca  The prices were quite astonishing, the reviews were all amazing and I received free shipping.  It almost felt too good to be true!

These were the items I first purchased from The Ordinary brand:

  1. The Buffet Serum
  2. Lactic Acid 10% + Hyaluronic Acid 2%
  3. Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA
  4. 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil
  5. Ordinary Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12%
  6. Retinoid 2%
  7. Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG

The whole lot including tax cost me $75.37.  I received my shipment in 2 days.  Impressive right?

I was actually thinking to myself “Is this really possible?”  I could easily spend $75.00 and change on one good serum at a retail store!  Am I dreaming?  Could The Ordinary Skin Care line really be this good at this price?

We’ve been sucked into thinking expensive means better all the time.

We believe we need to spend a lot on skin care in order for it to work.  The pricier the better.  Talk about mind control!

After doing my research and figuring out which serums to layer and how to use them I began testing these little bottles out.  My first love was with The Lactic Acid 10% + Hyaluronic Acid 2%.  It felt like I had new skin in the morning after using this serum at night.

The Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Oil was a winner as well.  At first it felt greasy but within 5 minutes this oil melted into my skin leaving it glowing with just the right amount of moisture.  I’ve even been known to add a drop of this oil right into my foundation especially on days when the winter weather outside was harsh.  My skin loved it!  That little dab of oil mixed into my foundation gave my skin a lovely glow that lasted a good 8 hours.

The Vitamin C (Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12% ) was and continues to be one of my favourites from The Ordinary Skin Care line.  I’m about to start my 3rd bottle of this lovely serum.  I mean, $12.90 for a vitamin C serum?  Come on!

A retinol  (Vitamin A) product for under $10.00?

I honestly couldn’t believe my eyes.  But I’m here to tell you, it exists and it damn well works.  Who would have believed it?  Not me.

The only product in The Ordinary Skin Care line that I wasn’t a big fan of was The Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG.  It’s a serum for your eye contour area and to be frank it probably is a good serum for some but it wasn’t right for my skin type.  I don’t actually suffer from severe dark circles and when I think about it, I probably bought it because it sounded good.  Caffeine!  Sounds like it means business right?  In reality, not so much for me.

I’ve been using The Ordinary products from July 2017

So I’m been using them consistently for about 9 months now.  I’ve purchased additional products from the range as well as trying some of Deciem’s Hylamide and NIOD brands too.

You know what?  These other two lines have also impressed me.

This eye serum from NIOD has made a huge difference around my eyes.  The lines around my eyes have most definitely diminished.  (I’m in my 50’s) I wouldn’t say I look 10 years younger but there is a difference.  A noticeable softness that I haven’t seen in years.  So worth the money I spent on it.

I mix up my serums every so often.  I love opening up my bathroom cabinet (sorry for the awful light in my bathroom!) to find all my little bottles of magic waiting to be played with.  It’s been an eye opening experience for me.  Always one to question products that are overly hyped up online, I am now joining the crowd of worshipers.  Miracles happen everyday. 😉

My next order from Deciem will be for some of NIOD’s face masks.  I do love me some good face masks.
